  1. Placement Scenario :

Energy Engineering from NIT Trichy is a good choice in terms of job placement If you’re seeking for a job and don’t mind a package in the region of 6-7 lpa, as has been the case every year.
(With the exception of the last batch, which suffered because of the sudden COVID-19 outbreak)

For 2020 passedout batch : Placement percentage : 80%
Max : 10, Avg : 6.5 ,Min : 5 lpa
For 2021 passout : Placement stat : 10/25 till now (Corona effect)
Max : 9
Avg : 6+
Companies which come for Recruitment :

Over the last few years, Energy students have been placed in a variety of companies, including Volvo, Mercedes-Benz R&D, Hyundai Motors, GE, TATA Motors, Cummins, TCE, Worja Energy, Forbes Marshall, Neptunus Power Plants, i2i Bridge etc. Everyone is given numerous chances to get placed.
Trichy being the best NIT and somewhat comparable to old IITs sees 250+ good companies every year. (60-70 in Core)

Energy Engineering being an Interdisciplinary branch has one benifit over other departments. We are also eligible to sit for placements in our UG degree dept .
Electrical students get to sit for almost all the Electrical companies that come for BTech and MTech . Same is the case with the Mechanical and Chemical students.
BioTech students also get opportunities in chemical as well as Energy specific companies.

Scenario for IT/Managerial related jobs. If you are interested in Non-Core and have the right set of skills ,you’ll get opportunities there as well.

  1. Course Work :

(Placements, Good for PSU job preparations, Can pursue PhD in IITs or in foreign University afterwards)
Now coming to one major advantage which one would get on joining this specialisation.
You would get a lot of time for preparation while pursuing your MTech.
The course work is somewhat on the easier side ( Even for Electrical students , all the answers on Quora regarding this dept being tough for Electrical are misleading)
Infact almost every year we see Electrical students topping the batch .
Chemical and BioTech students also can manage well.
For Mech it’s a cake walk.

You can manage to do well even on studying just before the exams in this specialisation ? (Thanks to the Relative Marking)
There be 2 CTs and one End Sem exam with equal weightage for all 3 (30 Marks) and some assignments and PPT presentations in all the subjects. The course work is very Interesting with all the subjects being related to Renewable sector with 8 subjects in each semesters .
I’ll mention them here so you’ll get the continuity.
Renewables power generation, Electrical Energy Technology, Bio energy, electric Vehicles, Batteries,CFD, Energy System modelling,Solar Energy Utilization, environment pollution and control, Energy Audit and management,Wind Hydro and Power systems, Advanced Fossil fuel technology, One NPTEL course, 1 lab in each sem and a mini project in the 2nd sem.

  1. My Suggestions :

As a senior I would advise you to decide based on all the options you have .
I’ll make it clear here that all these advantages( Placement Preps, Good Companies, PhD opportunities) will be there in your core specialisations as well (Except for the easy course work and time availability)
You’ve probably heard of the placement preparatory Exams that happen here in Trichy .
They push us hard to prepare for placements right from the second Sem.
They do not, however, teach us. They simply conduct numerous examinations in order to assist us in improving our apti and core understanding for the companies.
Electrical and Biotech+Chemical students need to attend 2 different placement prep exams , one in Energy Dept and another in Electrical dept/ Chemical dept.
Subject wise focus is on
Mechanical (40-50 percent), followed by Chemical (20-30 percent), Electrical (20-30 percent), and Biotechnology (5-10 percent ).
Many companies favour mechanical students, with only a handful refusing to let them sit for their campus drives .
Overall it’s a good choice if you want to learn something with less worries while getting ample of time for your preparation work.
Placement is not a concern unless this pandemic stretches.

All the best!!
